Designer: Alain Gilles
Belgian designer Alain Gilles came to design via an unconventional path, first studying political science and marketing before working in finance. A shift toward industrial design marked the beginning of what he describes as a second life. His work is driven by the meeting of opposing ideas, where contrast creates meaning. For the Wicked Collection, this dialogue is found in the tension between industrial metal structures and handwoven rattan. Gilles believes good design should be immediately readable, allowing people to sense the story and intention behind an object. In Wicked, this vision comes through in the graphic metal frame and the tactile rattan seat, where craftsmanship is felt most closely and the message of the design is quietly expressed.
"I really wanted to freshen up the image that people had of rattan furniture. And so the whole idea was really to ask ourselves how we could bring back the sense of freshness, how we could introduce these conversations within the seat and the more graphic aspect. And this came through the idea of working in a different way on two elements: the elements that support the shell and the entire structure."
